We’re thrilled to kick off Safety Week 2024! Each day this week we’ll post a highlight from one of our four Regions along the East Coast.
M-Station West (currently under construction), is the second phase of a 2-phase project in Morristown, NJ. The building consists of a seven story, 253,000 square foot Class-A office building and retail building, and a parking garage expansion that adds 491 spaces to the existing garage Barr & Barr constructed in the first phase. Barr & Barr’s contract includes the Core & Shell of the building and the entire garage construction and site improvements. Barr & Barr is working for a repeat client, SJP Properties the developer and owner.
The Project Team, trade partners and client have navigated a challenging urban environment with very little real estate on the site to work with, multiple trades and the clients fit out project running concurrently with Barr & Barr’s Core & Shell contract responsibilities.
Limited site access created logistical and safety challenges for constructing the project, delivering and hoisting materials as well as coordinating the daily work force. The challenges have been overcome by constructing the entire façade of the building using swing stages on every elevation, hoisting most materials utilizing a double material/personnel hoist to feed the floors with materials for both the Core & Shell work and the Tenant Fit Out contractor. When the site permits, hoisting materials into the building with cranes at coordinated loading zones has been utilized for larger materials and equipment.
Extensive logistic plans and crane lift plans have been coordinated with the municipality and local law enforcement to safely hoist major precast components weighing as much as 70,000 pounds and rooftop equipment weighing as much as 50,000 pounds while protecting the public, workers, and property.
Daily orientations for all workers are performed to communicate the safety protocols and requirements, which have proven successful. Each company and worker on site have bought into the project’s safety requirements ensuring a safe work environment. Daily and weekly safety meetings and stand downs have been implemented to reassure the workers of the ever-changing surroundings and hazards encountered daily. Cooperation, Communication and Coordination has been the key to a challenging and safe project.
Finally we’d like to mention a Topping Out Ceremony that was held today, May 6th, to recognize the efforts of the subcontractors working on the parking garage – the garage was actually topped off a few days ahead of schedule! Congratulations to the Barr & Barr team, SJP Properties, and the entire group of trade partners on the M-Station Project for a safe and successful project scheduled to be completed at the end of 2024.
