McCardell Bicentennial Hall, Middlebury College’s multidisciplinary science facility, is home to seven academic departments (biology, chemistry and biochemistry, computer science, geography, geology, physics, and psychology) and three programs (environmental studies, neuroscience, and molecular biology and biochemistry).

PROJECT DETAILS

The state-of-the-art research facility contains the Armstrong Science Library, numerous classrooms including additional space for the language school, six floors of laboratories, offices, a rooftop observatory, a greenhouse and the five-story Tormondsen Great Hall that serves as the buildings “town square”.

“Green” building features include natural and recycled building materials; and energy saving strategies such as a heat-recovery ventilation system, extensive natural lighting, motion sensitive lighting controls, high efficiency lighting, and triple-glazed windows. 125,000 Board feet of maple, cherry, oak, birch, and beech millwork was harvested and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified from Vermont forests.

Extensive blasting and excavation, a 2,200 linear foot road extension serves the facility and a 200 car parking lot.
