Since its founding, the Hospital for Special Surgery has continuously sought to meet the quality healthcare needs of the metropolitan New York area. As part of its major modernization program a seven-story building was built over the FDR Drive and constructed partially from barges in the East River. The project consisted of five floors of 160 medical and surgical beds, one floor of Radiology and one floor for a 50 space parking area. Also included were major alterations of the OR Suite, Rehab, Radiology, Doctor’s Offices, an Out-Patient Clinic and Day Surgery. Each of the patient floors boasts its own 1200 square foot Atrium.
Completed in record time, this addition is a good example of how innovative design coupled with precise construction coordination can result in a successful project.
